    Air

    When you travel to Newfoundland and Labrador by air, you can reach all areas of the province. Convenient schedules and flight times help you make your travel plans to suit your interests. Wherever you start your journey, there’s a wide variety of international and connector airlines from which to choose: Air Canada, WestJet, United Airlines, Provincial Airlines, Air Transat and Air Labrador provide travel to and from as well as within the province.

    The St. John’s International Airport is 10 minutes from the city centre.

    St. John’s International Airport is open 24 hours a day, providing numerous daily air travel connections between St. John’s and Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Western Canada and New York.

    For European travelers, there are several flights a week between St. John’s and London, England.

    Marine

    Marine Atlantic’s modern car ferries operate all year round from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques in western Newfoundland. Throughout the summer, a second ferry sails from North Sydney to Argentia, bringing you to within an hour or two of St. John’s. A variety of ferries or coastal boats operating on a year-round and seasonal basis service island and remote coastal communities. We recommend that you make reservations for Marine Atlantic and local ferries prior to travel. Ferry information/reservation service can be obtained by telephone:

    Drive to North Sydney, Nova Scotia and then travel across the ocean on the largest super-ferries in North America (call for reservations toll free 1-800-341-7981). Sail on Marine Atlantic year-round to Port aux Basques. Or during the summer months, take the longer route to Argentia.

    Ground

    Newfoundland and Labrador has a well-maintained highway system, and charter motorcoach service is available to centres throughout the island and Labrador region of the province. The City of St. John’s has a bus system operated by the St. John’s Transit Authority. The province is serviced by all of the national car rental agencies. Many visitors are surprised by the size of the province. To assist your planning, please review the distance chart elsewhere in this section.

    Hit the Road
    Rent a car or drive your own. From Port aux Basques, on Newfoundland’s west coast, the Trans Canada Highway links the Island to St. John’s, a distance of 905 km (543 miles). St. John’s is Mile Zero. From Argentia, the terminus of the Marine Atlantic ferry on the east coast, Route 100 connects with the Trans Canada Highway 131 km (78 miles) west of the capital city. All around Eastern Newfoundland are well-marked themed touring routes like the Irish Loop, the Cape Shore, the Baccalieu Trail, the Discovery Trail, the Heritage Run, etc. These scenic tours are loop routes which are well worth the drive as you pass through colourful outports along the edge of the sea.

    By Bus
    A bus service operates between Argentia and St. John’s. A bus is waiting at every ferry arrival during the summer months and also delivers passengers from St. John’s to Argentia. A daily bus between Port aux Basques and St. John’s is also available. In St. John’s, there are bus charters available.

    Getting To The Inn

    There are 3 entrances to the Bonavista Peninsula from the TransCanada Highway:

    • The west entrance onto Route 233 at Port Blandford
    • The central entrance near Thorburn Lake onto Route 230
    • The eastern entrance onto Route 230A at Clarenville

    From any of the entrances the drive to Fishers’ Loft in Port Rexton is between 45 and 60 minutes. In Port Rexton, turn right at the Trinity East turnoff. Follow the road for nearly a kilometre. Take the first left turn after the 30 km speed limit sign onto Mill Road. Check in at the Reception in the yellow Mansard house with the red roof.
